Background
The Department of Economics at Hasselt University, Faculty of Business Economics (BEW), consists of two research groups: (1) Economics & Policy Management and (2) Environmental Economics. The department is responsible for economic and econometric education within the faculty's programs, as well as in other faculties. This includes courses at both the bachelor's and master's levels.
As a teaching assistant, you will be part of a team of fellow assistants within the department. You will be supervised by the coordinating responsible person of the courses you contribute to and report to the department chair.

Job content
The position includes teaching support activities in the field of (applied) econometrics (bachelor) and time series analysis (master). You will be responsible for organizing and delivering practical sessions and will provide support for these courses, including:

  • Organizing remedial sessions and office hours for students;
  • Supervising group projects;
  • Preparing and grading exams;
  • Performing administrative tasks related to the organization of courses, practical sessions, assignments, and exams.
Although the primary task is supporting the above-mentioned courses, you may also undertake teaching support activities for economic courses at the bachelor's level.

Profile

  • You hold a master's degree in (applied) economic sciences or a related field with a clear economic specialization or will obtain it by September 2025.
  • You possess strong written and oral communication skills.

  • You have excellent programming skills in statistical software, particularly R.

  • You can demonstrate a strong affinity with econometrics and data analysis.

  • You are fluent in English both in written and oral communication. Knowledge of Dutch is considered an asset.

  • University-level teaching experience is a plus.

  • Holding a teaching master's degree in economics or an equivalent qualification is an advantage.

  • Dutch is the official administrative language of Hasselt University. If you do not have a sufficient knowledge of Dutch (CEFR level B2) upon your appointment, we expect you to obtain the required level no later than 5 years after being appointed. We provide tailor-made language training. If you are a coordinating lecturer you must have a command of the language of instruction of the program component at CEFR level C1.

Offer
You will be appointed and paid as Teaching assistant.
You will be appointed as a teaching assistant within the assistant academic staff (AAP) for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal upon a favorable evaluation. Appointment possible from 1 September 2025.

Selection procedure
You can only apply online up to and including 15 May 2025.
The selection procedure consists of a preselection based on application file, an interview and a test lesson / presentation.
Candidates who do not pass the preselection will be excluded. The final decision will be made based on the trial lecture and interview.
