At the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design, Department of Art, Design & Drama, there is a vacancy for a 100% position as Associate Professor of Visual Arts.

The position is related to teaching and supervision on the master's programme Aesthetic Practices in Society, the bachelor program Art and Design – Art and Dissemination, as well as contributing to the Ph.D programme Innovation for Sustainability.  

The multidisciplinary Masters in Aesthetic Practices in Society offers a full time study programme in the specialisations Art and Society, Fashion and Society, and Theatre and Society.

Combining practice and theory, these specialisations provide competence in creative practices in different social contexts. Here, the focus is specifically on art, design and theatre as socially engaged, co-creative and/or critical practices.

Additional part-time masters study options are offered in Art and Design Education and Art Therapy and a new programme in Teacher Education in Practical and Aesthetic Subjects for Years 1–13, Design, Arts and Crafts has recently commenced.

Research and teaching at the department of Art, Design & Drama, combine practical and theoretical approaches to creative practice in a contemporary context, and emphasize interdisciplinary collaborations. The degree programs include dissemination, project development, curation and pedagogy, aimed at both the private and public sectors. New technology, innovation, cultural entrepreneurship, sustainability and diversity are key focus areas. Through participation in professional networks and projects, the academic community at the department has distinguished itself regionally, nationally and internationally.

The position may be assigned programmes and course responsibility. The successful candidate is expected to take initiative as a teacher and researcher, and actively contribute to the department's research profile, which includes both scientific research and artistic practice. The position also includes work with externally funded activities and participation in networks nationally and internationally.

Your main duties and areas of responsibility will be to

  • teach and supervise at bachelor, master and Ph.D. level, and continuing education
  • follow up students in practical training
  • be in contact with the professional field
  • conduct your own research and development work
  • perform academic administrative tasks
  • actively contribute to the development if the department and OsloMet as an institution
  • communicate research results, both within in the academic community and society as a whole
  • be a driving force in the development of large-scale research projects and applications for external funding together with colleagues in the academic community
  • take the initiative to and further develop research collaborations with national and international partners
  • contribute to the departments work with community engagement and dissemination

Qualification requirements

  • PhD in Visual Arts in the field of contemporary art
  • experience in artistic research or research activities and dissemination or publication
  • demonstrated capacity to secure external research funding
  • experience in teaching and supervising students
  • very good oral and written communication skills in one Scandinavian language and English

The applicant must document relevant educational competence in accordance with OsloMet's Guidelines for the assessment of educational competence.

Applicants who do not have adequate proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, shall be offered Norwegian courses, and must acquire Norwegian skills corresponding to at least level B2 within three years of appointment.

General criteria for appointment to teaching and research positions are set out in the Regulations relating to Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions (FOR-2006-02-09-129), cf. transitional rules described in Section 13.2 of the Regulations relating to the Universities and University Colleges Act.

Emphasis will be placed on:

  • research and artistic practice relevant to the position
  • experience with research networks and projects with external funding
  • teaching and supervision experience at different tertiary education levels
  • Pedagogical abilities
  • experience with student-active learning methods and competence in digital teaching methods, including the use of digital teaching and assessment tools

Personal qualities required for the position

  • ability to motivate, inspire, communicate and collaborate with students and colleagues
  • experience with leading externally funded projects as well as participation in international research networks.
  • ability to listen and be curious about change
  • the ability to think critically about one's own field of practice
  • the ability to engage actively in socially relevant topics and issues

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreements in the state and OsloMet's salary policy, associate professor in position code 1011, NOK 615 700- 745 000 per year. For particularly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
