TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.

At the Institute of Materials Chemistry, in the Research Unit of Physical Chemistry TU Wien is offering the following tenure track position limited to expected 6 years for 40 hours/week. Expected start: July 2025.The candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibility to change the position to Associate Professor with an unlimited contract.

The tenure-track position is affiliated to the Institute of Materials Chemistry, Research Unit Physical Chemistry. Duties include research and teaching in the field of operando microscopy of catalytic reactions on the nanoscale. The focus of research should be the evaluation and mechanistic interpretation of localized catalytic reaction dynamics, based on experimental observations in real time. The applicant’s scientific profile should complement on-going research activities in the context of the recently established Cluster of Excellence “Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage” (CoE MECS).

Tasks:

Research:

  • Planning and execution of in-situ/operando microscopy experiments to investigate catalytic research questions on the topic of reaction dynamics
  • Imaging/visualization of reactants on nanostructured surfaces
  • Resolving spatial and temporal reaction steps and their catalytic coupling on the nanoscale, preferably by field emission microscopy (FEM) on individual nanoparticles
  • Investigations on extended metal surfaces, polycrystalline foils, alloys and complex oxides (and their combination)
  • Development and automation of video data analysis to make parameters of reaction dynamics accessible
  • Development of two-dimensional microkinetic models for improved interpretation and verification of long-term microscopy measurements
  • Collaboration on correlative studies (see above) and especially on synchrotron beam times
  • Dissemination of research results; organization of scientific conferences/symposia and outreach activities

Administration:

  • Participation in university self-administration

Teaching:

  • The successful candidate will teach in classes and lab courses of the Bachelor and Master curricula Technical Chemistry. It is emphasized that currently the teaching in the Bachelor curriculum is in German language requiring appropriate language skills
  • Coverage of the entire Physical Chemistry/Material Chemistry courses of the Master's degree program in Technical Chemistry, for lectures and in laboratory courses, or as part of other relevant Master programmes (e.g. “Chemistry and Materials Technology”, “Green Chemistry”)
  • Involvement in basic and research-led teaching, as well as experience in the direct supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD students

Your profile:

  • Domestic or equivalent foreign university degree with a doctorate in technical chemistry or chemistry appropriate to the application
  • Experience in postdoctoral research, preferentially in an international setting
  • Excellent proficiency in German (C1) and English (B2)
  • Profound expertise in the operation of UHV systems with chemically resolving microscopes, in particular field-emission microscopes (FEM, FIM), and their further development
  • Expertise in designing and experimentally generating a spatial and temporal reaction sequence on the nanoscale
  • Extensive understanding of synchrotron-based imaging techniques
  • Experience in the field of automated video data analysis with the aim of 2D microkinetic modelling of catalytic reaction steps
  • Competence in the development of research questions and cooperation in projects that rely on the advantages of a combination of experiment and simulation
  • Outstanding achievements and potential in research, regular excellent publication activity in the international scientific literature in the desired topics (see above), international presentation practice, national and international research co-operations
  • Experience in the conception and implementation of research projectsWillingness to cooperate with other research groups at TU Wien in research and teaching and to acquire third-party fundingHandling of management tasks within the organizational structure, organizational and team work skills as well as excellent communication skills
  • Subject-related teaching experience in academic teaching in lectures and laboratory exercises, organization and management of courses (e.g. laboratory exercises), proven experience in the (co-)supervision of academic workIdeally, experience in the promotion of young scientists

We offer:

  • A wide variety and exciting range of tasks in a collegial team
  • Hybrid working style with up to 60% home office option
  • A range of attractive social benefits (see Fringe-Benefit Catalogue of TU Wien)
  • Wide range of internal and external training opportunities, various career options
  • Central location of workplace as well as good accessibility (U1/U4 Karlsplatz)

The employment starts as University Assistant with a minimum salary of EUR 4,932.90 gross (14 x per year) according to the collective bargaining agreement for a PostDoc. After signing the qualification agreement, the employment continues as Assistant Professor with a minimum salary of EUR 5,808.20 gross (14 x per year). We look forward to receiving your application until June 12th, 2025.

The application (in English) should include the following files:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Motivation letter
  • Certificates of doctoral and diploma degrees (copies)
  • List of scientific achievements and experience in teaching and training of young scientists
  • Brief description of future plans in research and teaching, contributing to the scientific profile of the COE MECS, the faculty, and the university
  • List of third-party funded projects
