Job description

Brussels offers the advantages of a multicultural capital at the heart of Europe and the comfort of a metropolis on a human scale, 1:20 by train from Paris, 1:30 from Amsterdam, 1h:0 from London and Cologne. Working at ULB means working in a green, lively and stimulating environment. Internationally recognised, ULB covers all university disciplines, closely combining high-quality teaching and cutting-edge research. It organises 40 bachelor's degrees, 150 master's degrees and 3 Erasmus Mundus, more than 65 specialised master's degrees, has 6 Nobel Prize winners and participates in 20 doctoral schools where almost 2,000 doctorates are in progress. ULB is also committed to defending freedoms, independence, and tolerance daily (find out more).

The candidate will carry out teaching and research activities for a period of two years renewable twice to complete a doctoral thesis (total max. of 3 x 2 years).

For research activities, the person hired will take part in a research project aimed at describing and understanding the impact of N-glycosylation of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in patients with sepsis hospitalized in intensive care. Sepsis is a syndrome induced by microbial pathogens and is characterized by complex alterations in tissue perfusion and inflammatory responses. In Europe, around 40% of patients with sepsis and 55% of those with septic shock die. The diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis still face challenges. We will analyze IgG glycosylation profiles more comprehensively and broadly, to investigate correlations with mortality risk. To this end, we will carry out analyses at 3 different levels: 1) IgG released glycans, 2) IgG glycopeptides, 3) IgG-cell receptor interaction. This will enable us to carry out a clinical analysis and validate profiles to better assess the prognosis of patients with sepsis in intensive care.

The candidate will be a member of the Pharmacognosy, Bioanalysis and Medicines Unit (RD3-PBM), which comprises 4 academics, 5 technicians, 2 post-docs and 8 researchers in various fields. He/she will be trained in the latest research tools, from mass spectrometers to data processing.

The person hired will be expected to carry out teaching duties in the ULB Faculty of Pharmacy. These activities will be assigned by the pedagogical coordination committee.

He/she will also be required to carry out various administrative and logistical activities relating to the Research Unit and the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Main Research Field : Pharmacological Sciences

Sub Research Field : Pharmacy, Analytical Chemistry

Required educational level: Master level in Pharmacological, Biomedical, Biological or Chemical Sciences.
